Aquaculture Feed Pelleting Vs Extrusion for Optimal Production
ข่าว บริษัท ล่าสุดเกี่ยวกับ Aquaculture Feed Pelleting Vs Extrusion for Optimal Production

When fish swarm at the water's surface to compete for food or quietly forage at the bottom, few consider how the manufacturing process behind their feed determines the success or failure of aquaculture operations. For fish farmers, feed serves not just as a nutritional vehicle but as the linchpin of cost control. The choice between pellet mills and extruders—two fundamentally different processing methods—can create substantial differences in feed conversion ratios (FCR), nutrient retention, and ultimately, economic returns.

Core Processing Differences: Compression vs. "Cooking"

Pelletizing is essentially a physical compression process. Under combined effects of moisture, temperature, and pressure, powdered raw materials are compacted into dense pellets. Since this method cannot significantly reduce material bulk density and achieves limited starch gelatinization, the resulting pellets have high density and naturally sink. This makes pellet mills ideal for producing feed for bottom-feeding species like shrimp and trout, particularly when formulating diets with fat content below 12%.

Extrusion, by contrast, represents precision "cooking." Beyond simple shaping, it employs high temperature, pressure, and shear forces to achieve complete starch gelatinization. The gelatinized starch acts as a natural binder, giving extruded feed superior structural integrity that resists breakage during transport and in water. More importantly, by adjusting extruder parameters—temperature, moisture, screw speed, and die configuration—producers can precisely control buoyancy, enabling flexible production of either sinking or floating feed.

Nutritional Trade-offs: Retention vs. Digestibility

The high-temperature environment of extrusion (typically exceeding 90°C) poses significant challenges to nutrient stability. Vitamins—particularly fat-soluble vitamins A and D, along with water-soluble B-complex vitamins—are highly susceptible to degradation under heat, shear, and oxidation. L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) may be almost completely destroyed, necessitating the use of more stable derivatives like ascorbic acid monophosphate or polyphosphate in extruded feeds. Pelletizing, with its milder thermal processing, better preserves vitamin bioactivity.

However, extrusion demonstrates clear advantages in digestibility. The intense heat and pressure thoroughly disrupt native structures of starch and proteins, making them more accessible for fish digestion. This significantly improves FCR. Additionally, pellet feeds often contain more powder and have weaker structural integrity, leading to higher waste during feeding—an invisible cost driver in aquaculture operations.

Economic Considerations: From Capital Investment to Formula Optimization

The investment decision requires balancing multiple factors:

  • Equipment costs : Extruders carry substantially higher capital and maintenance expenses than pellet mills, with lower production capacity at equivalent power ratings.
  • Formula flexibility : Pelletizing demands higher-quality raw materials and typically requires additional binders and higher starch proportions. Extrusion's superior starch utilization creates room for more protein-rich ingredients, potentially lowering formula costs while enhancing nutritional value.
  • Comprehensive benefits : Despite higher production costs, extruded feeds often deliver better long-term economic returns for modern high-output farms through superior FCR and environmental adaptability.

In summary, pellet mills maintain relevance through cost-efficiency and suitability for specific species like bottom feeders, while extrusion has become the gold standard in modern aquaculture feed production, offering unmatched processing flexibility, digestibility, and buoyancy control. The optimal choice depends on farming objectives, species requirements, and thorough cost-benefit analysis.
